Transference

Also: Übertragung

DEFINITION

Transference is the unconscious carrying over of feelings, expectations and ways of relating from earlier important relationships onto someone in the present, most often a therapist.

In plain words

Transference is what happens when a person reacts to someone new as if they were someone old. A therapist who is simply late can feel like the parent who never showed up. A kind remark can feel like a trap. The feeling is real, but part of it belongs to an earlier relationship.

Where the idea comes from

Freud met transference in his first clinical work and at first treated it as an obstacle, a form of resistance. He came to see that working with it was central to treatment: the sources describe it as becoming the analyst's "best tool". In Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920) he describes patients who, instead of remembering repressed experiences, relive them with the analyst, and he names the result "transference-neurosis". That observation led him to the repetition compulsion.

Positive transference (admiration, dependence, attraction) and negative transference (anger, mistrust) are both described. The analyst's own emotional response is a separate topic: countertransference.

How it shows up

In a consulting room, it may look like a client who expects criticism from a gentle therapist, or who tries hard to please and then goes quiet. Outside therapy, the same process appears with a manager, a partner or a friend who happens to resemble someone from the past in tone, role or voice. Social psychologists describe a version of this: Andersen and Berk (1998) propose that meeting a person who resembles a significant other leads us to infer, without noticing, that the new person shares that other's traits.

TwentyThird does not stage a therapeutic relationship, and Oneli is an AI that says so. It can still notice how a member writes about authority, closeness or being let down, and put that observation back in plain words. If a member starts to treat Oneli as a parent or a judge, that is information worth bringing to their psychologist. See how to talk to your psychologist about what an AI noticed.

What it is not

It is not a synonym for any feeling toward a therapist. Corey and colleagues caution that transference is "not a catch-all concept": a client may dislike a therapist for good present-day reasons. Horney (1939) criticised the term's focus on reviving the past alone. The concept is clinical and interpretive; the social-cognitive research above supports a related process but does not test Freud's wider theory. Whether a reaction is transference is a judgement a clinician makes with the person, not a label to apply to oneself.
