The Symbolic, the Imaginary and the Real

Also: RSI, les trois registres, Lacan's three registers

DEFINITION

The Symbolic, the Imaginary and the Real are Jacques Lacan's three registers of psychic life: language and law, images and identification, and what escapes both.

In plain words

Lacan divided human experience into three layers that are always present together. The Imaginary is the world of images and identification: who you look like, who you compare yourself with. The Symbolic is the world of words, names, rules and roles: what you are called and what you are allowed to want. The Real is what neither can fully grasp: what stays outside the story.

Where the idea comes from

In 1953 Lacan gave a lecture titled "The Symbolic, the Imaginary and the Real" (Le symbolique, l'imaginaire et le réel), and the triad runs through his work after that. The Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy account ties the Imaginary to the mirror stage (1936 paper; see the mirror stage), the Symbolic to the 1953 "Rome Discourse", later published in Écrits (1966) as "Function and Field of Speech and Language in Psychoanalysis", and the Real to his later work on what is barred from representation.

The Symbolic draws on Saussure's linguistics and Lévi-Strauss's anthropology; Lacan treats the unconscious as the discourse of the Other (see the big Other), and links the Symbolic to the Law that regulates desire. The Real is described as what escapes the Symbolic, that "which never ceases to write itself" and that always returns to the same place; it is related to the death drive and to repetition. Between 1972 and 1978 Lacan treated the three as equivalent and pictured them as interlocking rings of a Borromean knot, where cutting one frees the other two.

How it shows up

Readers of Lacan use the registers to ask where a difficulty sits. A person stuck comparing themselves with others is in the Imaginary. A person bound by a title, a family role or a name is in the Symbolic. A shock that has no words yet is close to the Real. That is a way of sorting, not a test.

On TwentyThird, Oneli, the AI agent, does not use these categories with members. It talks in plain words about what repeats and what the member says they want.

What it is not

It is not a typology of people, and it is not a diagnostic scheme. It is one author's vocabulary, and its later forms, with the knot and the sinthome, are especially specialised: the Wikipedia article on the Symbolic notes it is unclear how fruitful these later ideas will prove compared with the Symbolic. Lacan's work is contested within and outside psychoanalysis. Treat the concept as a literature to read, not as a finding about the mind.
