Alternatives to Youper, and what to look for.

Youper has closed. Here is what it was, what the sources say happened, and what to check in whatever you try next.

In short

Youper has closed. Its site carries a notice that it discontinued its services on 30 September 2026, and Common Sense Media reports it disappeared from the App Store and Google Play on 27 April 2026. It was an AI chatbot for mood tracking and reflection. TwentyThird is a different kind of tool and a partial alternative.

What happened

A dated sequence, from the sources.

As of 2026-10-30. Each line links the page it comes from.

  1. 27 Apr 2026

Common Sense Media reports Youper, with more than 3 million users, disappeared from the App Store and Google Play. Its methodology section gives “after 25 April”, so the exact day differs within the report.

  2. 18 May 2026

Common Sense Media says Youper and Earkick left the stores without warning users or referring them to other care. It did not rate either app because neither could be downloaded.

Who designs the agent

  • TwentyThirdWhere TwentyThird is limited

A licensed psychologist configures Oneli, the agent a member talks to. This is in early access: psychologists are being verified, and until a member has one, the agent works on its own.

  • Youper (closed)

Its site describes Youper, Inc. of San Francisco and an AI chatbot for tracking mood, reflecting on emotional wellbeing and organising thoughts in a journal. It states the service is for people aged 18 and over.

Who is responsible for what it says

  • TwentyThird

WelloWork AB operates the service. Where a psychologist supervises, decisions about care belong to that psychologist, not to the AI. Without one, nobody at TwentyThird reads a member’s messages.

  • Youper (closed)

Its site states that responses have not been reviewed by a licensed mental health professional, that Youper is not FDA-cleared or approved, and that it is not a substitute for professional care.

What to look for

Ten questions for a replacement.

The last one matters more after a closure.

  1. Who designed the agent, and can you find their name and qualifications?
  2. Who is responsible for what it says, and is that written down?
  3. Can any human see what you write, and who decides?
  4. Is every message checked for risk, and is a person alerted when it matters?
  5. What does it say it will not do?
  6. What evidence exists, and is it about this product or about something similar?
  7. Where is your data stored, and which companies process it?
  8. What does it cost after the trial, and how do you cancel?
  9. Can you export or delete everything you wrote?
  10. What happens to your data and your access if the company closes?
Where TwentyThird fits

A partial alternative, stated plainly.

TwentyThird does not offer

  • A person alerted when you are in danger. Today none is. Contact local emergency services; in the EU, call 112.
  • A medical-device certification. TwentyThird has none.
  • A service that keeps data wholly inside the EU. AI replies are written outside the EU.

TwentyThird may fit if you want

  • Written conversations with an agent that follows what repeats across weeks.
  • The option of a licensed psychologist configuring the agent (early access).
  • An agent that says plainly it is an AI and not your therapist.
Questions

Common questions, answered.

Is Youper still available?

No. Youper’s site carries a notice that it discontinued its services on 30 September 2026, and Common Sense Media reports it disappeared from the App Store and Google Play on 27 April 2026. Its methodology section gives “after 25 April”, so the day differs within that report.

Is TwentyThird an alternative to Youper?

Partly. Youper was an AI chatbot for mood tracking, reflection and journaling. TwentyThird is a psychodynamic AI for self-understanding that is not therapy. If you want a mood-tracking chatbot, it is not like-for-like.

What happened to my Youper data?

We could not establish this from the sources. Common Sense Media says users were left without transition support, and Youper’s site links a privacy policy. Read that policy and contact Youper through the channel it lists to ask about your data.

What should I look for in a replacement?

Ask who designed it, who is responsible for what it says, what a human can see, what is checked for risk, what it will not do, the evidence, where data goes, the real price, export and deletion, and what happens if the company closes.

If you are in danger, contact local emergency services now — 112 anywhere in the EU. TwentyThird is not an emergency service. How safety works
