Alternatives to Woebot, and what to look for.

The Woebot consumer app closed. Here is what it was, what happened and when, and what to check in whatever you try next.

In short

The Woebot consumer app was retired on 30 June 2025, according to Woebot Health’s FAQ: new accounts cannot be created and old accounts cannot be accessed. It was a scripted, CBT-based chat app. TwentyThird is a different kind of tool, a psychodynamic AI that is not therapy, so it is a partial alternative at most.

Who designs the agent

  • TwentyThirdWhere TwentyThird is limited

A licensed psychologist configures Oneli, the agent a member talks to. This is in early access: psychologists are being verified, and until a member has one, the agent works on its own.

  • Woebot (consumer app retired)

STAT describes a smartphone app with a cartoon-style bot that guided conversations based on cognitive behavioural therapy techniques, with responses that were pre-scripted rather than generated.

Where the data goes

  • TwentyThirdWhere TwentyThird is limited

Account data and what a member writes are stored in an EU database. AI replies are written by Google’s Gemini models through OpenRouter, outside the EU. It is not an EU-only service; the privacy page lists every processor.

What to look for

Ten questions for a replacement.

The last one matters more after a closure.

  1. Who designed the agent, and can you find their name and qualifications?
  2. Who is responsible for what it says, and is that written down?
  3. Can any human see what you write, and who decides?
  4. Is every message checked for risk, and is a person alerted when it matters?
  5. What does it say it will not do?
  6. What evidence exists, and is it about this product or about something similar?
  7. Where is your data stored, and which companies process it?
  8. What does it cost after the trial, and how do you cancel?
  9. Can you export or delete everything you wrote?
  10. What happens to your data and your access if the company closes?
Where TwentyThird fits

A partial alternative, stated plainly.

TwentyThird does not offer

  • Scripted CBT exercises. Oneli is a psychodynamic conversation, not a skills programme.
  • A person alerted when you are in danger. Today none is. Contact local emergency services; in the EU, call 112.
  • A medical-device certification. TwentyThird has none.
  • A service that keeps data wholly inside the EU. AI replies are written outside the EU.

TwentyThird may fit if you want

  • To write in your own words and have an agent follow what repeats across weeks.
  • The option of a licensed psychologist configuring the agent (early access).
  • An agent that says plainly it is an AI and not your therapist.
Questions

Common questions, answered.

Is Woebot still available?

Not as a consumer app. Woebot Health’s FAQ states that the Woebot app was retired on 30 June 2025, new accounts cannot be created and previous accounts cannot be accessed. Its home page, as of 2026-10-30, links to offerings for providers and payers.

Is TwentyThird an alternative to Woebot?

Partly. Woebot was a scripted CBT chat app; TwentyThird is a psychodynamic AI for self-understanding that is not therapy. If you want scripted CBT exercises, TwentyThird is not like-for-like. If you want an agent that follows what repeats in your writing, it may fit.

Why did Woebot close its app?

STAT reported on 2 July 2025 that founder Alison Darcy attributed the shutdown largely to the cost and challenge of meeting the FDA’s requirements for marketing authorisation. That is her account as reported; Woebot Health’s own pages we read give no reason.

What happened to my Woebot data?

HLTH reported in April 2025 that users could download their conversation history until the last day of service and that Woebot Health would anonymise all account data after 31 July. We could not confirm the current position on Woebot Health’s pages.

If you are in danger, contact local emergency services now — 112 anywhere in the EU. TwentyThird is not an emergency service. How safety works
